At Corpus Christi, our aim is for all pupils to take part in physical activity on a regular basis to become more physically competent and confident. We intend to promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage children to create healthy habits that will contribute to their long term wellbeing and mental health. At Corpus Christi, we are ambitious for all children and continue invest heavily in our facilities and provision so that all children are exposed to and benefit from high quality teaching and a rich diversity of opportunities regardless of background, gender or ability. Our inclusive Physical Education lessons will give the children the opportunity to become well rounded individuals, through embedding values such as leadership, fairness, respect, resilience, independence, open-mindedness and compassion. In addition, at Corpus Christi, we make sure that the children are given the opportunity to experience a wide range of activities through our broad curriculum and extensive extra-curricular programme. Fixtures, many of which are competitive, are a fundamental part of Corpus Christi school; they offer children a chance to increase resilience through experiencing failure as well as an opportunity to shine and excel. They give our children the opportunity to represent the school on a wider platform, put their skills into practice and are an excellent opportunity to improve our children’s character.
Our specialist PE teacher, in collaboration with Romero has designed an ambitious curriculum based around the National Curriculum for Physical Education and utilising our excellent sporting facilities which encompass:
Utilising our sporting facilities and equipment, we continue to develop our extra-curricular programme and give the opportunity to all children to access extra-curricular clubs through removing barriers. Competitive sport is a vital instrument in our PE curriculum allowing all pupils the opportunity to compete in both inter-school competitions such as house sports and intra school like School Games and in within the Coventry Catholic Sports. However, at Corpus it isn’t just about participating in sports we also provide opportunities for our children to take other avenues such as coaching and officiating. An example from last year was the participation of selected pupils in the ‘Commonwealth Connections Project’ where pupils joined another 5 schools across Coventry to actively work on projects connected to last year’s Commonwealth Games. The success of this project has been continued this year through the ‘Road to Paris Olympics’.
We believe that the delivery of our PE curriculum through highly skilled and passionate staff will inspire this generation of children to fall in love with PE and sport and provide them with the opportunity to continue lifelong participation in physical activity and healthy living. Through the broad curriculum and extensive extra-curricular programme, children will master fundamental skills, knowledge and understanding to become competent at playing a wide range of sports that will bring them pleasure throughout their life. In addition, we know that it will also teach them lifelong skills such as team work, leadership and respect. The positive feedback from children continues to evidence the pivotal role PE and sport plays in their lives and the experiences it provides for them as an individual or part of a team. Equally, it provides unique opportunities for them to be exposed to the wider world and become inspired to be the best they can be. Examples of this can be seen in the Game Changers who are involved in the current project ‘Road to Paris’ who recently hosted and led a football event for other schools as part of the celebration of Ladies Football in conjunction with the Football Association. In addition, we have had children who have been able to attend world class sporting events such as boxing and Judo from the Commonwealth Games, matches from the recent Rugby League World Cup and more recently watching the Lionesses in action.
